JosephBrandon Thomas is a black mixed media artist and designer, from New Orleans, La. In his youth, he established himself as a premier muralist specializing in figurative work focusing on the culture of the city as part of the Young Aspirations Young Artists organization (“YAYA”) from 1995 to 2000. While continuing to work on his art practice, Thomas took a number of jobs in LA to fund his passion, including: Pastry Chef, Firefighter and Oil Refinery Technician. The artist left LA in 2015 to move to Los Angeles in order to finish his formal art training at Otis College of art.
The artist graduated from Otis College of Art & Design with a BFA in Toy Design in 2018. Thomas has worked as a Toy Design Intern at SpinMaster, a Product Designer at Alpha Complex, and a Creative Director at CallFree Media Technology, Inc. He maintains a studio at Hawthorne Arts Complex (“HAC”) where he paints, sculpts, designs and build wearable products, toys and collectibles. JosephBrandon exhibits his work quarterly at HAC and frequently engages with the public and potential buyers during open studios and by appointment.
The artist work is clearly inspired by his upbringing in New Orleans, a mixed culture neighborhood of working class artists, musicians and laborers. The catalyst for his creative dive began when his parents split up at age 12 years old and he had to become self-reliant, think for himself and take care of his younger brothers.
JosephBrandon’s art evokes critical thinking into the contemporary climate of the systematic social injustices of oppressed people of African-American descent. He invites the viewer to interact with the inner world of racism and its psychological effects and feelings that harbor depression and how to overcome its ill effects. His transformational surreal images, rich in symbolism and emotion, focus on themes of colors inspired by human psychology, dreams, as well as his own experiences.
The objective of Be Immense Studios is to shine light on the black experience and consciously help people of original descent, to not waste time in being doubtful of their skin color, but to overcome the doubt brought on by society and to “Be Immense” by any creative means necessary. Be Immense is his internal mantra which is repeated whenever there is any doubt. There is no doubt.

A large part of the artists’ practice revolves around fashion accessories under the brand name Pretty Guerrilla; including items such as leather phone and wallet holsters, fashion bags, denim and t-shirts. Pretty Guerrilla focuses on “re-appropriating” brands or objects that take away from black culture such as turning the gun holster into i-phone carrier or overprinting the Pretty Guerrilla logo on other brands that have lifted from his culture. The theme is “reanimate your reality”.
